Behind the Scenes

Being a writer is glamourous.

I wake up, don my flannel shirt dress, and brew a mug of single-bean brunette roast.

For the next several hours, I string pearls of words into sparkling stories that speak to the human condition. I wax philosophical, and then poetical, and fill page after page with wisdom and wit.

There’s ample natural light in my modern workspace, and I’m constantly illuminated.

Lol jk. Being a writer is HARD.

For one thing, it’s only about 10% writing, which means 90% is actual work. You have to come up with ideas, remember ideas, and express them in actual words. You have to somehow make it so other people will read those words – and maybe even pay for them. You have to write social media posts with actual content – not just snarky Twitter replies – and you have to do a lot of marketing.

You can wear a shirt dress, but no one will see it except maybe the cat and she knows that you got it on sale.

Actually, being a writer isn't glamorous, at least not all the time - so I'm not sure why we all try to make it seem like it is.

Don't get me wrong, it's pretty amazing, even behind the scenes...

...but it's not as easy as it looks on Instagram.
